I'd start by measuring the usable area at the venue, then work out how many holes fit comfortably. Here's what I'd check.
How big are the holes?
Each of our three portable mini golf holes measures approximately 2.5 metres long and 0.8 metres wide. That's around two square metres of equipment per hole, or roughly six square metres for all three before you allow any room for playing.
Please don't treat six square metres as a recommended minimum for three holes. Players need space to stand, take a shot, wait their turn and move to the next hole without getting in one another's way.
The clearance needed depends on where doors, furniture and other activities are. We'd assess the actual layout rather than give a guaranteed space figure that doesn't work at your venue.
Do all three holes need to be together?
No. They're separate pieces, so they don't need to form one long straight course. You might have three holes in a corner of a lawn, or arrange them differently around a suitable reception area.
I'd still keep the route between holes straightforward. If guests have to cross the main entrance or carry putters through a dining area, I'd look for a different layout.
Could it fit indoors?
Possibly. Function rooms, barns, marquees and suitable covered areas can all be options if the venue permits the equipment and there's room to play safely.
The floor needs to be reasonably level. We'd also check what's already in the room, when it will be used for other parts of the wedding and whether there's enough access to bring the equipment in and collect it afterwards.
What about lawns and courtyards?
A flat, suitable lawn or hard surface can work. I'd check slopes, uneven ground, narrow paths and where staff need to move. A big lawn that's far away from the drinks reception may be less useful than a smaller spot close to your guests.
If there are children attending, think about whether they'll be walking through the playing area and how they'll be supervised.
A simple way to test the space
Ask your venue for a rough floor plan or take some measurements. Mark out a 2.5 metre by 0.8 metre rectangle for each hole, then stand where a player would stand and imagine someone waiting beside them.
Check the route to the bar, toilets and main doors. If it feels awkward while the room is empty, it won't improve when guests arrive.
What if all three won't fit?
You may not need all three. We offer one or two holes as add-ons to garden games bookings, which can be a good way to include mini golf in a smaller venue. The standalone mini golf package contains all three holes.
If you're unsure, send us the proposed dimensions or photographs. I'd much rather work through the space before the wedding than find out on the day that the course blocks a doorway. You can see photographs of the three-hole setup on our mini golf page.
